Is The Wizard a board game? ›

Wizard is a board game system of medieval fantasy magical combat published by Metagaming in 1978 that was designed to complement the previously published Melee, a system of melee combat rules. Forty years later, Wizard was revived and re-released by Steve Jackson Games.

At the end of each round, each player is given a score based on their performance. For predicting the number of tricks taken correctly, a player receives 20 points plus 10 points for each trick taken. For predicting the number of tricks taken incorrectly, a player loses 10 points for each trick over or under.

The Wizard two player design does a good job of providing a challenge and making an interesting game. The game play is different and will take a while to determine how best to bet on predictions of tricks that can be taken. I look forward to trying to use this version and may change my attitude about it over time.

I enjoy trick taking games and, IMHO, Wizard is one of the better ones. It's challenging, fun, and I find the increasing number of cards dealt each round, not to mention the addition of Wizards and Jesters, to be very refreshing.

The biggest problem I see with a regular 52-card deck is that it only divides evenly by 4, meaning that's the only time all cards will be in play. Contrast that to the final round of any player count of Wizard (60 divides evenly by 3, 4, 5, and 6).

The class can be incredibly rewarding to play, and when done right, they make everyone in the party shine.

The playing and winning of the tricks uses mostly standard trick-taking rules. If a player leads a suited card, then all other players must follow suit, if possible. If a player leads a Jester, then the second player determines the suit led. If a player leads a Wizard, then those who follow can play whatever they want.
