I know that the process of print and cut using your Silhouette Cameo can be an intimidating process, but I promise, it’s not as difficult as it sounds.

Just follow along with this tutorial and before you know it, you’ll be a Print and Cut DIY Diva in no time!

Materials needed

Scroll to the bottom for a printable card.

  1. Today we’ll be using the 48 Christmas Gift Round Sticker Set from The Hungry JPEG. I just love this oh-so-cute set and can’t wait to use them for Christmas this year! (Make sure you activate your E-bates ticket before you make your purchase so you earn your FREE money for buying something you were already going to purchase anyway!)
  2. Cardstock or Sticker Paper – I prefer removable matte sticker paper. I love having the ability to easily move my stickers, especially when I’m making my planner stickers!
  3. Cutting Mat

Tools Needed

  1. Printer
  2. Silhouette Cameo

Silhouette Studio

Let’s pause and talk about Silhouette Studio for just a quick moment.

When you purchase a Silhouette Cameo cutting machine, you get the basic edition of Silhouette Studio which is a great place to start.

However, you will notice in the images below that I have the Business Edition of Silhouette Studio. Even if you don’t own your own business, I highly recommend it.

It’s a one-time upgrade fee and includes everything you get in Designer Edition and Designer Plus Edition, plus it includes additional upgrades like my favorite of being able to export my designs in SVG, PDF, and JPG formats.

Seriously, Business Edition is worth every single penny!

Page setup

I have no doubt you’re anxious to get started, so open the Silhouette Studio program and then follow along as I take you through these simple steps.

(You may notice in the pictures below that I have a few features that you don’t. Don’t be alarmed about this. I have the Business Edition – which you can get for a one-time upgrade fee and I highly recommend, even if you aren’t running a business – but you don’t need it for this tutorial)

  • Open the “page setup” window on the upper right side of your screen and adjust the page settings to width 8.5″ and height to 11″ I also like to have my print border and cut border checked so that I ensure I have everything situated on the mat properly.

  • Open the “registration marks” window. Choose the machine you are using in the style dropdown.

Important Tip: To get a little extra room on your mat, in the advanced settings move the Left Inset, Top Inset and Right Inset all the way to the left. However, DO NOT change the Bottom Inset. This could cause an error and your machine may not be able to read the registration marks properly when cutting.

Import your file

I used the PDF files from this set as it was more vibrant than the JPG image was.

The 48 Christmas Gift Round Sticker Set comes in black and white as well as a fun black and gold glitter.

I’ve chosen to use the black and white since I’m not yet sure what color of wrapping paper I’ll be using this year, and I want it to go with anything I choose. (Yes, I’m THAT girl! You too?)

When you click on the PDF file, a screen may pop up asking if you want to import the image. If it does, simply click “yes.” If it doesn’t, just move on to the next step.

  • As you can see, the stickers are large and extend beyond the black registration marks, so you can do one of two things here.

  • You can cut and paste some of the stickers, move them onto another mat, and cut them separately.
  • Or you can simply click on the image (they are already grouped together) and a box will appear around the entire set of stickers. Grab one of the toggle boxes in the corner with your cursor and move it towards the center. This will shrink all the stickers at once so you don’t have to do it individually. (I chose to do this so that they all fit on the same mat.)

  • Position your design on the mat so that it sits within the black registration marks and the red cut line.

Prepare the file to print and cut

At this point, you can print the stickers, however, if you were to try and cut them, they would only cut on the outer/page line and that’s not at all what we want.

In order to turn each of the stickers into a cut file, we need to trace and then detach them from the page. (Don’t panic, it’s really simple to do!)

  • Open the trace window located on the right toolbar.
Learn how easy it is to Print and Cut with Your Silhouette (8)
  • Click Select Trace Area.
Learn how easy it is to Print and Cut with Your Silhouette (9)
  • Click on the image. (At this point, it will choose the entire page since Silhouette Studio is reading it as one image.)
  • Once you have selected the area, you’ll notice that some of the images turn yellow. We, however, want the circles to be entirely yellow. In order to fix this, move the Threshold over to 100%. Now you’ll notice that the circles are completely yellow. (You’ll also see that the images within the circles cannot be seen and that’s o.k. Right now, we just want to zero in on the circles.)
Learn how easy it is to Print and Cut with Your Silhouette (10)
  • Click Trace and Detach. (Don’t worry if you don’t see anything happen.)
  • Click a location somewhere just outside of one of the circles (which is the original page the design was attached to) and hit Delete.

Wala! The stickers are now detached from the page they were imported in on and if you look closely, there will be individual boxes around each of the stickers!

print YOUR DESIGN

Don’t quit on me now! You’re almost done!

  • Load your paper into your printer, making sure you load it correctly. (For my printer, I have to load facedown.)
  • Once your paper has been loaded, click Print on the top left bar.
  • Adjust your printer settings, and hit print.

cut the imported images

Now here is where the real magic begins!

  • Open your Send Window on the top right of Silhouette studio and choose the material you will be using. Note the blade depth, force, speed, and amount of passes.
Learn how easy it is to Print and Cut with Your Silhouette (14)

Let’s take a quick moment to talk about what we are going to do here.

Since I’m using sticker paper, I will be doing what’s called a “kiss cut,” therefore, I want the blade to cut through the top sticker layer, but not through the paper backing.

Important Tip: If you’re also using sticker paper, I highly recommend doing a test cut to see how deep you need your blade. My blade does great with a blade depth of 1 with 1 pass (meaning it will only cut the design once.)

Learn how easy it is to Print and Cut with Your Silhouette (15)
  • Highlight the stickers and click Cut Edge. (This ensures that you won’t cut the design within the sticker, but only the outside edge of it.)
  • Click Send on the bottom of the Send Window.

Your Silhouette will read the registration marks and cut your design! (If you get that dreaded, “Silhouette Registration Error,” get the solution that works every time!

And that, my friend, is all there is to it!

Wrapping Up

It takes a few extra steps, but with some practice and a little patience, you’ll be using the Print and Cut feature on your Silhouette Cameo to make all sorts of things!

Organize your closets, pantry and kid’s rooms with stickers by using your favorite text in Silhouette Studio.

Create custom designs with your stickers for the kid’s chore charts, or throw them in their birthday or school party bags.

The sky is the limit when you learn how to do this fun little trick with your Silhouette Cameo!
